It's thought that flying causes over 7% of the total pollution levels on the planet, and as we've been battered by the rain here this last month I reckon it's a good idea to do something about it.
The only valid reasons I can see for having jet aircraft are air ambulances and the military. Business can video-conference or just accept getting somewhere will take longer, and as for tourism which I believe is the main pollutant - why don't we make they fly by airship?
To take flying London to the Spanish costas as an example, the trip's currently 2 1/2 hours. In an airship that's going to be 10 hours - but there are certain compensations. You're going slow enough and low enough that you can admire the view, even open the window. You're not strapped to a seat, and there's room for a bar/restaurant, cinema, gym or pretty much whatever else you wanted. Or you could be herded in like cattle as flying is at the moment, but then the flight would cost you next to nothing.
You don't even need to use airports if you don't want to. You could even have ro-ro versions to take your car on holiday, though environment wise that may be defeating the object.
All in all airships seem a fantastic idea. So should the UN outlaw jet aircraft, bomb the Boeing plants etc? Would you mind flights taking 4 times as long if they were cheaper, roomier and much more scenic? Or are you a jack bastard who's all 'ME ME ME' and doesn't give a **** about the climate?
Why would I want to take 4 times longer to go somewhere? Next thing people will be saying that it's better to cycle than drive a car, even it takes 4 times as long.
The view from an airship would get rather boring after 6 hours anyway.

I didn't say you'd want it to take four times longer. I advocated bombing Boeing and Airbus so you'd be left with no choice in the matter.
