The plot for this series is fairly standalone but it is of course affected by previous seasons - most notably, what happened to Jack at the end of season five.

The BBC have a page which summarises the events of the previous five seasons (with huge spoilers for them, obviously) if you're really that way inclined, but I recommend you get hold of season one ASAP and just work your way up to the present series.
