Also I believe the guy who won or was nominated for an Oscar as best Supporting Actor from the Killing Fields was tragically murdered not long after in a carjacking.
All that random knowledge and I didn't even need to look on IMDB. | Wiki - Haing S. Ngor
Not a car-jacking, but a mugging - and in '96, so a fair time after the film was released:
"On February 25, 1996, Ngor was shot to death outside his home in Chinatown, which is located in downtown Los Angeles, California. Ngor was buried at the Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Los Angeles.
Charged with the murder were three reputed members of the "Oriental Lazy Boyz" street gang who had a prior history of snatching purses and jewelry. They were tried together in the Superior Court of Los Angeles, though their cases were heard by three separate juries.[5] Prosecutors argued that they killed Ngor because, after handing over his gold Rolex watch willingly he refused to give them a locket that contained a photo of his deceased wife, My-Huoy. Defense attorneys suggested the murder was a politically motivated killing carried out by sympathizers of the Khmer Rouge but offered no evidence to support this theory."

Perhaps some of the younger posters hadn't heard of what happened back then, which is why I tried to give a bit of background. It's perhaps not as well know as other conflicts which have had mass genocide.

| TBh BG, this is one conflict that is still being felt today.
The whole country is littered with Landmines and there was some stat that I remember in regards to every family (on average) lost at least 1 member.
Pretty horrific and when you add in that many of the original parliament are still alive and in positions of power, you can see how far this country still needs to travel to get out of the shade of this era.

Of course, Docker. As I understand it, the Khmer Rouge were still operating well into the 90's. Indeed, wasn't Pol Pot rumoured to have links to the Tory government at the time (under Thatcher). Not sure if that government were involved in supplying them with weapons in their fight against the Vietnamese ?

A similar sort of film which really struck a chord with me was 'Shooting Dogs' based on mass genocide of warring tribes in Rwanda.
Clearly not an 'entertaining' film, but very thought provoking and sad.
