| yeah I remember that. happened in the ronaldo hat trick game, and came from the longest clearance I've ever seen from roberto carlos. commentators decided to ignore it until the replay. was quite confused at the time </BLOCKQUOTE>
IIRC everyone in the ground saw it though and howled at the same time. Was very very odd |

free kick on the edge of the area to them. wall formed in correct place, no man on the line or within the 6 yard box. one of their players is in a clearly offside position, wide of the goal, so we make it known to the referee that he's offside. the free kick is taken, it takes a large deflection and rolls slowly onto the post. the rebound drops to him and he slots it away. ref gives offside, which I think is correct, but the other team contested it pretty strongly. was it just them not knowing the rules? they tried to argue it was a different phase, and one bloke even tried to argue that the ball was going backwards when he received it and passes backwards can't be offside, but am I right in thinking he was just quite far offside?
| Correct to disallow it - Law states: Quote:
Decision 2
The definitions of elements of involvement in active play are as follows:
• Interfering with play means playing or touching the ball passed or touched by a team-mate.
• Interfering with an opponent means preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or movements or making a gesture or movement which, in the opinion of the referee, deceives or distracts an opponent.
• Gaining an advantage by being in that position means playing a ball that rebounds to him off a post or the crossbar having been in an offside position or playing a ball that rebounds to him off an opponent having been in an offside position.
| He is pinged definitely under the third condition - also could be the second one as well as you've noticed he's there and said so
Also - doesn't matter which way the ball is played - the player in question must be behind the ball and the defenders when it was struck

behind the ball AND the defenders?
i thought if a player who was in an "offside" position (closer to the goal than less than 2 defenders) but was BEHIND the ball and the ball was played BACK to him (or square) then he's not offside?

| That should read OR instead, otherwise correct. (Yes I know I'm a bit pedantic )

| Yea that's correct. But once again the, direction of the ball isn't relevant only the position is.

| yeah - typo there.
the ball can be played forward - but as long as the other one is behind the ball etc, then he can't be offside
