This is probably the closest interpretation on here.
A player can only get sent off for one of the penal offences (plus foul & abusive language), that is, an action that results in a direct free kick/a penalty. As the punishment for a backpass is an indirect free kick, there really is no issue whatsoever about whether it should or should not be a red card.

situation from our match last week that I wanted to clarify and forgot to make a thread about:

free kick on the edge of the area to them. wall formed in correct place, no man on the line or within the 6 yard box. one of their players is in a clearly offside position, wide of the goal, so we make it known to the referee that he's offside. the free kick is taken, it takes a large deflection and rolls slowly onto the post. the rebound drops to him and he slots it away. ref gives offside, which I think is correct, but the other team contested it pretty strongly. was it just them not knowing the rules? they tried to argue it was a different phase, and one bloke even tried to argue that the ball was going backwards when he received it and passes backwards can't be offside, but am I right in thinking he was just quite far offside?

yeah I remember that. happened in the ronaldo hat trick game, and came from the longest clearance I've ever seen from roberto carlos. commentators decided to ignore it until the replay. was quite confused at the time

Sounds like the right thing to do.

Well that is certainly arguable but I think it takes a bit more than a deflection to be a "new phase".

He's been eating stupid pills. The offside rule doesn't care about what direction a pass is played (actually it doesn't even care if it is a pass or not).

You can't be offside if the ball's in front of you, so a backwards pass that goes directly to a player can't result in an offside against that player.

True. But that has absolutely nothing to do with the direction of the pass but rather all to do with the position of the ball.

Yes. Did you get a chance to look at the Ayr highlights and form an opinion?

Nope. No vids showed up on the page (a whole lot of nothing did though) and then my browser crashed.
