Why should it be a red card?

The purpose of the rule is to prevent time wasting, not to make it easier to defenders to score own goals. And I would imagine quite a few backpasses would be going towards the goal so just because a keeper has to make more of an effort should not make more of a difference, infact the backpass rule should be ignored.

Never a red card tbh. And as someone has said, it isn't picking the ball up, it's touching the ball with his hands.

Although most ref's let quite a bit slide these days.

Saying that when we were playing Sunday football the other week, one of our older players got injured and went in goal, the ball was passed back to him and he just picked it up.

His excuse was "last time I played football you could pick it up!" Fecking unsurprisingly we lost.

If a goalie stops a backpass with his hands because he has to make a save then surely hes prevented a clear goalscoring opportunity and has to be sent off?

In that case surely every backpass offence is 'preventing a goalscoring opportunity' since 99% of the time keepers do it when they are under intense pressure from opposition.

a red card wouldn't really be within the spirit of the rule in the same way they don't give a direct penalty kick for it

That was the famous 5-1 victory against Germany iirc.

It's really to stop players rolling the ball around the back and wasting time as used to happen alot before. One of the better rules changes of recent times imho.

What annoys me if when an attacking side passes the ball or hits it and it somehow comes off a defender and back to the keeper the crowd howls for a backpass. It's a back pass and not "who it touched last".

A remember a few dodgy decisions a few years back with free kicks awarded for back passes when it just smacked off someone by accident and back to the keeper

Not really backpass but does anyone remember Fabian Barthez just blantently coming 5 or 6 yards out of his box and just touching the ball down with his hand to control it. Ref did nothing I think it might have against Real Madrid in the Champions League ... very odd, the cheek of it

It would have helped if you actually read the thread before posting as I already stated that a ball that isn't "deliberately played to" the goalkeeper if fine to pick up. As per the Laws of the Game.

There is no clear goalscorer involved though so that rule isn't relevant.
