Ruud Gullit on Friday will add his name to the long list of prominent soccer coaches who have tried to make the sport fly in the United States when he is introduced as the new coach of the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The former Dutch soccer star and current television analyst, who will make his bow at a morning press conference at the Home Depot Center, has been charged by AEG, the team's owner, with producing the sort of "sexy" soccer that will win back fans disillusioned by two years of the Galaxy's poor play.
Although Major League Soccer does not reveal details of player and coach contracts, reports in Britain, where Gullit has been working for Sky Sports, suggested that he had signed a three-year contract worth an estimated $10 million.
Former German national team coach Juergen Klinsmann also was approached by AEG for the Galaxy job but said he preferred to continue coaching on the national team level.
Both MLS and its forerunner, the North American Soccer League, have signed high-profile foreign coaches in the past. The list includes such figures as Brazil's Carlos Alberto Parreira, the Netherlands' Rinus Michels and Italy's Walter Zenga. Gullit is expected to take charge of the Galaxy ahead of its trip to Australia and New Zealand later this month.

I'm not sure any team but the Lakers can find success in LA. What kind of support can a non-dynasty expect there?
Galaxy's average attendance is bigger than the Lakers'. </BLOCKQUOTE>
