What I loved was the way the German director tried to show all the ways the goal shouldn't have been counted, such as a slow-mo close up of the ball going out just before for a throw and Nolan's 'handball' just before he played it through.

Talk about clutching at straws! And I thought we were bad!

From Beveridge Park to Bayern Munich
STUART BATHGATE (sbathgate@scotsman.com)

That Was The Team That Was
BBC1 Scotland

BACK in the mid-1990s, the prize for winning the League Cup, besides the trophy itself, was a place in the UEFA Cup. So when Raith Rovers won through to the final, their manager, Jimmy Nicholl, had no problem deciding how to motivate his players.

"We're 90 minutes away from Europe," he told them before they ran out to face Celtic on 27 November 1994. It seemed a good soundbite - until the match went to extra time, forcing Nicholl to give another pep talk to his exhausted side.

"We're 30 minutes away from Europe," he announced, in inspired fashion. Only they weren't, because extra-time failed to divide the sides, and so the Coca-Cola Cup, as it was then known, would be decided on penalties.

So, as he prepared his team for the shoot-out, what did Jimmy Nick say to gee them up? You guessed it. "We're a penalty kick away from Europe."

And this time it worked. Scott Thomson saved from Paul McStay, and the dancing in the streets of Raith began.

Nicholl told the story against himself in the latest episode of the That Was The Team That Was last night, and it summed up the spirit of enjoyment the Raith team of that era were able to bring to their work. It helped that they had more than a bit of talent in their side - they were massive underdogs, if that is not a contradiction in terms, against Celtic and again later against Bayern Munich, but a few of them could play a bit.

Colin Cameron, Stevie Crawford, Dave Narey and Gordon Dalziel were in that side, as was Nicholl himself, of course, in the 1994-95 season. "He was a fantastic player," Dalziel recalled of his gaffer with grudging good humour. "I hate to say it, but he was."

Dalziel, Nicholl and Narey all hung up their boots in the summer of 1995, once promotion back to the Premier League had been secured in the final match of the season, but Tony Rougier and Jim McInally were both on board by the time the UEFA Cup campaign started. And it started well, with a preliminary-round win over Gotu Itrottarfelag or Faroese words to that effect.

It carried on well in the first round proper with victory against Akranes, then everything went into hyperbolic overdrive when the Kirkcaldy club were drawn against Bayern Munich. The folk memory of that tie is of the giant scoreboard in the Olympic Stadium displaying the score Bayern 0 Raith Rovers 1, and it is true enough that for a while that was indeed the score. What is not so often remembered, though, was the fact that by that time Raith were already two goals down from the first leg at Easter Road.

It therefore required a little more than Danny Lennon's deflected free-kick to get the Scottish side back into the contest, and when a Rougier shot hit the side netting a few minutes into the second half there was a collective feeling that the bubble had burst, that the impossible dream, as the programme described it, was exactly that - impossible.

Two more goals from the Germans, and Raith were out on a 4-1 aggregate. It all went downhill after that, or at least after a respectable sixth-place finish in the Premier League. Nicholl, his reputation having soared thanks to the two cup campaigns, headed for Millwall, taking three of his key players with him, and making a decline more or less inevitable.

It was fun while it lasted, however, and that was the overwhelming impression given by That Was The Team That Was. The players enjoyed their football and their training sessions, even when the latter were conducted on the dogs' open-plan lavatory that was Beveridge Park, and it showed in the results. Well, the good ones anyway.

Cracking result. Bayern were very impressive and fast with their play, particularly around the box. I was a little surprised they took off Ribery and Schweinsteiger, thought it was a little too early, sure they were coasting but they didnt look overly impressive when Bolton did get the ball into their box (granted, wasnt often the later the game went on!)

Aris beat Red Star 3-0 which really opens the group up. Bolton have them at home next which would give them 5 with a win. Not sure if that's enough
