i know very little about laptops so basically want someone who does to tell me what is good.

spending around £400 and all its needed for is uni work, dvds and music really.

i would like 80gb hard drive minimum, wireless capabilities, decent speakers and it to be ridiculously fast.

I suggest you the first one because you said that is important that he plays dvds music and the first one has the biggest LCD monitor(17"9 which is good for movies.The other computers have better performance but you have no intention to play games and the first one is the one that you should buy

Are you carrying it around?

Because 17"9 inches of Laptop sounds quite a lot to carry round, mine's 15"4 and a bit of a pain.
