I'm hoping that at school they will do other instruments than the traditional Bavarian ones... So it looks like a 1/2 guitar is the way to go then. At a few tenners, it wouldn't even be a big loss if she lost interest, but for some reason I think she'd really like it. Once she gets fascinated by something, she really sinks her teeth in.
I'd start her on an acoustic one. Amps and distortion are fine, but not used by a beginner in my living room

you'd need an amp as well, iirc they don't do that many cheap practice amps at pmt (except the marshall ones, which aren't very good) but you can probably get good ones elsewhere or online
I'm not in Birmingham now, on placement
Was looking at Schechter, any good?

I'd definitely say get one. You'd be right to not bother with amps or distortion to start with, get the technique right and she'll be set. But definitely try and find a teacher, I'd imagine at a younger age, they can probably pick it up a bit quicker anyway.
Or she could be ultra cool like me and learn how to play the violin instead.

is that at my wrong there or their? or at my asking at a guitar shop point? i guess the chains might be crap, but if you go to an independent one they'll generally help as much as they can
