Okay, so it’s by no means perfect but Bay & co. still exceeded all my expectations as far as delivering a very good TF film.
Other than some extended periods of fleshling vs. TF action that I didn't think needed to be focused on as much (primarily Scorponok vs. the US army); a few "comedy moments" that I just didn’t think were funny (Bumblebee "****ing" on the guy from Sector 7 - by the way, worst character in it for me – the guy not BB); and a couple of bits where a different shot choice would have been better and more characterisation welcome (the "one shall stand, one shall fall" bit & other than the allusions to the Megatron/Starscream relationship zip for pretty much all the other Decepticons); it still was, for me at least, well delivered.
Gotta say that I didn't care for the line towards the end in which Prime alluded to Megatron as his brother.
That,
IMO, was as bad a choice as anything in the movie. Its
always been about ideology between the two, no need to make it familial.
That said I thought the numerous homages to the original TV series and cartoon were welcome (both verbal and visual), and there was a lot more deference to G1 than I expected overall. As for the new stuff, despite how little he was in it, and despite the fact that there wasn't a really full on Prime vs. Megatron scene (next movie please), in the context of the film its easier to rationalise his new design and I thought he did convey real and utter menace (Weaving even sounded pretty much like Welker in places as well) and he and Bumblebee in particular looked especially badass.
Blackout was cool as well, but like I said above, its a pity that they're essentially nothing but cannon-fodder in the final analysis. I am however willing to accept that element to an extent though because 1 - other than Megs and Screamer they don't have any G1 connection in truth and so without any back-story (i.e. X amount of cartoons to establish them) they don't really need to be anything other than killing machines. They did better with the Autobots because, obviously bar Jazz, they need them to stick around for a while to deal with what will almost inevitably be the return of Megs and Screamer plus a few choice others.
Anyway, all in all pretty happy and accepting of the weaker elements because there was so much I could connect and be impressed with.
