Prime had a fight with Rodimus on the production line. Prime was white cos he had a special protective coating.

Alright then here it goes

As people have said the toy of Ultra Magnus was basically the same as Optimus Prime except he was all White and had a different trailer, in order to make him into the robot form you had to build him in armor using his trailer and a helmet.

Theres one explanation for this which I must point out has never been confirmed in any comic or anything.

In the cartoon episode War Dawn the Arielbots go back in time and meet 3 Transformers named Orion Pax, Dion and Ariel. Later in the episode we discover that Orion Pax is actually Optimus Prime before he's rebuilt by Alpha Trion. We also discover that Ariel was rebuilt and became Elita One, but we never discovered what happened to Dion. Its believed that Dion was also rebuilt by Alpha Trion in the same image, but was never seen and eventually became Ultra Magnus wearing armor just like his toy version. In the Dreamwave comic linked by dbaz earlier in the thread peace had broken out on Cybertron between the Autobots and the Decepticons, Shockwave was the leader with Ultra Magnus his 2nd in command. Shockwave later betrayed everyone and shot Ultra Magnus in the back, believing to have killed him. This leads to a battle between Optimus Prime and Shockwave, which Shockwave wins. Whilst Shockwave is gloating, you see Ultra Magnus take off his helmet aswell as his armor, the White 'Optimus Prime' is revealed and he takes Prime's gun and shoots Shockwave.
