time passes - campaign released

Client: "Our feedback tells us that the entire nation hates this campaign. They think it's shoddy, not remotely funny and doesn't bear any relation to our product."

Advertising dude: "Ahhhh but people are talking about it"

Client: "Yes, they hate it. What's more our sales haven't gone up one bit".

Advertising Dude: "Ahhh but people will remember your brand name now - that's the key. Hope we've been of help, and I look forward to more brand awareness for Coca Cola!"

Hmmm, much as I'm sycophantic about my industry, that there be a load of ballacks.

You've no proof that:

A. It is hated
B. Hasn't driven sales
C. £5m is waaaaaayyyyy too much to spend on a campaign.

In fact you could instead turn this around and say it has been an unmitigated success, for the following reasons:

A. Made on a shoestring (would guess the music would've cost the most)
B. Everyone is talking about it.
C. Amount of free column inches, radio and TV reportage they would have otherwise had to pay for.

Thumbs up, backs slapped and fives highed all over I would guess.
