Talked it through with my mates and family last night and I'm till undecided on how to go about this. I' defo have to show up at the interview so it's a question of telling the truth or excusing myself for a few hours for a "personal family matter".

tell them your nan died, they wont question it and you'll even get another day off for the funeral PLUS everybody is nice to you. Unless you're employed by the FAI, but ive used it at every job ive ever had

I would Gimp, but it would look very suspect if I hand in my notice the following week if I get the new job. I could still be dealing with my these people if I get my new job so I want to avoid lieing.

1. Rather than asking the boss for the day off, ask him "if it's worth looking into a career" with that company. Like you're half and half, then explain you've got an interview, out of politeness he'll probably tell you to give it a shot.
2. Lie, the best excuse is taking an elderly family member to the doctors/hospital. It's not death and it's not to do with yourself, so you get off free.
3. Beg the new company for alternative arrangements, like an evening interview, I'd had myself one of those in the past as some companies do accomodate it. Or, if you have a decent lunchbreak i.e. an hour, you could have a mini interview at a local restaurant and then carry on talking on the phone later.
Personally, I'd go for option 2. Always keep in mind that an interview isn't always a definate job so there's no real reason to put your current job at risk.

Interesting choice you have to make, I would go with the lie about the family situation. If you didn't get it and they knew you were looking for a way out it would be hard.
A question though, I have also been thinking of sorting my CV out and sticking it on Monster. Have people had much success doing this?

Exactly right. If you have a good relationship with your boss, protect it by being honest and by stressing that you are only doing this because it is your dream job. Tell him the story you told us -- that you were not and are not actively looking for a new job, but that the perfect job appears to have fallen into your lap. If he isn't sympathetic, then maybe your present situation isn't as good as you think it is.

Jorg, I've had 11 different recruiters contact me since I updated my CV on Monster last week. They are literally tripping over themselves to get to me.
I've emailed the recruiter to ask if I can get a morning interview between 9am-10am. This way, I simply won't go into the office is the morning and ring and say " I have to drive my girlfirend to the doctor" They know I live with her so it's believable.
I'll let you know how I get on! If the interview goes well, Tuesday night will be interesting, I will be on the beer with my boss.....

Whatever you do don't tell your boss. You may get on well with him and be friendly but his loyalty lies with what's best for his career. If you tell and and don't get the job your back with you current company with your boss knowing you're looking to leave. He'll have no vested interest in your career.

if you can get a 9am-10am interview an excuse shouldnt be a problem. Either the girlfriend to the doctors or a plumbing problem, water everywhere, should do the trick
