Your problem is that you want to give too much detail. The best lies are the ones that are so brief. If you walk in and start explaining in explicit detail exactly why you're not on and why - then everyone will know you're lying. If you play it completely blasé and off the cuff, then no-one questions it...

IIRC the company cannot refuse you time off for an interview at another company. At least in the UK.
If it were a simple case of him actively looking for other work, then i'd agree, it's not likely to be something he should tell them, however, this is his dream job, once in a lifetime kind of scenario. Most bosses i've worked for would actually be incredibly understanding in that situation.
