It tells the story of life in such a place, at the end of the 1970's. A brutal and sadistic regime that offered little chance of rehabilitation and hope to those incarcerated there. The film itself is quite bleak and is perhaps a fair reflection of how life was in such a place. It also includes some uncomfortable graphic scenes which may shock if you've never seen it.
I remember as a kid, borstals were spoken of somewhere you'd get sent if you were really out of control. The place was associated with something akin to fear. A couple of older lad's from the village where I lived at the time, ended up going to such places. From what I heard subsequently, it didn't improve their behaviour. The system was extremely flawed and yet it wasn't until the early-mid 1980's that the system was changed.
Of course there are Young Offender's Units these days, although I'm not sure how they operate.

Yup - two of the most harrowing bits. The version I saw last night included extra footage of the young lad who committed suicide, that I hadn't seen before. Very graphic.

wet sand is better, it makes a nice quiet thudding noise. perfect for sneaking up behind someone and knocking them out without their mates noticing. i do this all the time iirc.
