I am going to Barcelona tomorrow, should be fun, but I have a few questions I cant really find answers for?
What is the language barrier like? Ive read English speaking is pretty low compared to what you might expect, but looking online, I cant get a straight answer. half the holiday reviews say its a disaster and they could barely eat because nobody at all spoke english, and the other half say that its absolutely trouble free and everywhere is fine to communicate. I mean I know a little spanish, but not enough where Id feel totally comfortable ordering a whole meal or something.
Then generally anything else I should look out for, things to do etc?
I was there for a weekend few months ago, language barrier not a problem at all from what little I experienced.
Subway system ifb 24hrs and air conditioned although be really careful with your tickets if you need to use it as they only need one little crease and the electric ticket readers at the gates don't open.
I only spent 2 days there but: go and see the Gaudi cathedral, and have paella with black rice just for the novelty. And definitely swagger and gesticulate slightly more than you would at home.
Went to Barcelona for a weekend a couple of months ago, was great.
Language thing not a problem at all, especially if you can speak a bit of Spanish.
The metro's good, get that everywhere.
While I was there I did the following things.
Went for nights out clubbing, was great but can't remember anywhere specific.
Tour of Camp Nou stadium which was alright but not stunning, didn't get to spend as much time as I'd have liked in the interesting-looking museum.
Went to the big Gaudi church and had a look round, that was brilliant I thought, love that building, certainly the one thing I'd say you have to do.
Went to Park Guell, which is a park full of unusual Gaudi architecture. It was quite nice to walk around, didn't spend that long there though and didn't really know where we were going. Probably qg if you spent a whole afternoon there.
Familia Sagrada, Parc Guell, um, We went to the top of Montjuic on the cablecar which in all honesty just killed time.
If you want to eat there are a thousand little places. The Zoo is awesome. I don't like them at all usually. The aquarium is pretty good I guess, if you like that kind of thing.
If as you said she's into her shopping, then I basically remember this one department store that screamed 'MONEYPIT!!!' at me, so I faked hunger and managed to pacify her with food. I suppose that's the main thing. They aren't very fashionable in Barcelona, which should help.
The Metro is good but can be confusing, there are about 40 different lines, but you shouldn't be too troubled living where you do anyway. Um, for the night just head down to Port Olympic, there's loads of clubs and bars which are fairly cool.
