So My job involves processing prescriptions for the nhs so the chemist gets paid for the drugs. Most of us today have mmoved over to a new computer system at work. Basically more upto date and uses OCR type software to scan prescriptions rather than us doing all the work manually. We still have to do some, but not as much. Been in development a fair bit and clearly has cost alot to kit the office out with new Core 2 Duo PCs (god knows why, never need all that power).
Anyway the system has 1 major flaw in it, you cant correct your mistakes We have to input details of the prescriptions with 97.5% accuracy. Today i know i made a few mistakes but i wasnt allowed to correct them. I asked why the hell you cant, and they said "we are just aiming to get it working first". How is a major major bug a working system
So people wonder why the NHS has no money, its due to them wasting god knows how much on computer systems that dont do their job properly
The last contract i supported in the job i left last month was for a trust in London. The amount of pointless phone calls we would get every single day was staggering.
It's a minimum of £7 a phone call. Which is for general things like not being able to set up Outlook properly or forgetting their passwords. Now, considering that
a) the trust wouldn't use roaming profiles
&
b) have it's staff regularly hot desk
we used to get a lot of calls every day for Outlook issues. Add in the password resets and you're looking at a bare minimum of 25 calls a day for minor issues.
Can you not feedback issues with the software to the developers.
The system has just been introduced so surely there is the opportunity to report back.
Possibly from a development planning point of view they believe that the users are such dumb arses they cannot be provided with that level of useability ? :p

Dude, we've had a new computer system (we're also talking NHS here) for over 2 years now and it's still got more bugs in it than FM08.
Cost the trust - only covering two sites here - cost £18m to get Misys to create the software and support it for 5 years.
Thing is the old system was easier to use, did more etc, although it did look like a DOS based RPG, at least it bloody worked.
Oh and we were told the new system would NEVER crash cos there were two servers, or something, and if one went down the other kicks in.

Its new to us, but has been live in other divisions for quite awhile now (albeit to a handful of users). This is version 3 of the software. Im certain it would have been reported but for some reason not fixed. Cant wait until i get a feedback sheet to fill in.
Thing is i could in theory lose my job if i dont maintain accuracy. And not being able to correct mistakes you know you made isnt helping
What i found with my time supporting the trust i did was that, the staff weren't really consulted on what they required from the system and nor were we.
The people on the IT side within the trust would just decide they wanted it done in a certain way and didn't care about how practical it was for the staff or how much of an impact it would have on us.
Additionally, when we'd do what they told us to do, they then would turn around and tell us that that isn't how they wanted us to do it.

We had a chance to do that when we got our new system as i've described above. What seemed like a plane load of Yanks came over for a week to speak to everyone about what they needed from the system, what needed changing, making better etc.

Most of the NHS systems (that looked like DOS based RPGs ) have to be replaced because the incumbent support teams were quoting an absolute fortune to extend the contract for such legacy software. It's one of the few parts of the software industry that is caught in the trap because they can't offshore, hence they can charge the earth and get away with it.
(I'm involved with the Service management for NHS SPINE btw)
