Default patenting a brilliant idea

anyone ever done it? or know anything about it?

I've had loads of rubbish ideas before, but one has cropped up now which is actually brilliant. I'm not going to tell you what it is though.

What on earth would be the first steps for actually doing something with an idea? It's basically an adaptation/addition on an already household item to improve it, so it's not something invented in it's own right. Is that sort of thing even patentable? What sort of costs would you be looking at? I think my uni has a scheme for helping student inventors, I might go speak to them.

i'm so excited, i'm going be rich!

someone's probably already patented it, but not had the funding to pursue it, patenting is only the first step. See you on Dragon's Den.
