A company would presumably have to give you a chunk of their sales, or a massive one-off fee, if they used it in their tellies.

Me, I just think more things should be windy-up. Windy-up torches and radios are all very well, but I'd like to just be able to crank up my house lights and PC once in a while, to save on electricity.

I don't know UK-specific patent law, but in general you can't patent an "idea". You can patent a specific method of implementing an idea, but that means you'd have to be very clear about the technical aspects, and you seem to indicate that you don't.

Rubbish. I know the method of implementing it, and that the technology is available because it is used elsewhere for similar effect. I can say 'take x and implement it into y for z effect'. I couldn't write up instructions of how to engineer the thing from scratch.
