It's actually really expensive to patent something. Need a patent lawyer and all that. Not sure about patenting an idea. Every country has different laws. Your university might help you out, but they'd take a lot of future profits.

Well, you could tell us what category it's in without giving the game away... so if you'd invented the clockwork radio (I know, I know) you'd be able to say it was a radio without much fear of having it stolen.

Is it aaaaaaa..... kitchen device?

here's some great ideas:

a butter button on the toaster (they have spray on butter now, it's not hard to invent)
a alarm clock that sprays you with water once you pressed snooze three times in a row
a human plug socket that harnesses the natural electricity in our bodies so it can be used on everyday items
Glasses that can look around corners
Air powered cars
Books to read in the bath
aftershave that smells like Brad Pitts b.o
condoms, that are sold with discount ciggies
a half and half matress, so one partner can have a hard mattress, the other a foam etc.
extendable trousers.

my company has a newish department that helps people develop ideas, and helps with all the patent stuff.

not had a lot to do with them myself (other than training him on the CAD and data management system), but i know the guy who runs it and can put you in touch with him if you want? i can give you a website, contact name and an email address. even his xbox live gamertag

dont know what "cut" they take, but they deal with all the legal stuff and we have the best patent lawyer in europe working for us.

I'm going to have to downgrade my idea from 'brilliant' to 'good' I think. might have got a bit over-excited.

it's related to televisions ceefax. it's not exactly going to make sales boom, which probably doesn't help, but it is the kind of thing I think people would see and think 'ooh that's good, can't believe it wasn't brought about sooner!'

the fact it won't make sales boom, isn't an integral part of a tv, and that I have no knowledge of the technical side of it has caused me to downgrade from brilliant. all I know is it's good and definately do-able.

then also, as it would become a part of an already selling product, what would happen if say I did get it patented and presented successfully etc etc. Seeing as it's not a device of it's own from which you could measure sales, would television manufacturers pay a lump sum to buy the idea and implement it? getting way ahead here, I doubt anything will ever come of this just a bit intrigued
