Slicethepie turns every music fan into a record label. Earn money right now scouting for new talent, support your favourite bands by voting in Showcases and finance artists you think will be successful. Over time trade in and out of artists to build your own portfolio and make money in the process.
Now i haven't yet signed up to this myself. You don't have to finance the artists, you can just make money by voting on songs. The more you vote, the more you will make over time. Sounds quite interesting and i am about to sign up.

Sounds interesting for bands, but I don't see many general listeners sticking with this. It's too frustrating to listen to so much crap for the off chance that there's something you'll like. The little money you make doesn't offset this.
Garageband.com has a similar concept, though an important difference is that reviewers don't get paid. Still, the only people actively participating in reviews there are other artists who do this plainly to get exposure for their own songs.

i see what you are saying TADW, however i know a few people on here like to listen to "unheard" of bands, so i thought this would interest them.

I personally think that last.fm is way better for discovering unheard bands, because it embeds unknown artists between popular ones if they're similar, and you have much more control over what type of music is being played.

the more detailed reviews you give, the quicker you move up the rating scale and the more you earn per song.
You start off at 1 * and get 5p per song, the top rating is 5 * which you get 25p per song.

A thoughtful and detailed review would take you at least 5 minutes, if not 10. Let's use 10 minutes including the time needed to listen to the song (around 3-4 minutes) as an example, which would pay 30p an hour at the default rating, and 1.50 an hour at the top rating. I can't see the money being a substantial long-term motivation.

It says on the website that the reviews only need to be a few sentences each.
