I'm just updating my ipod for the first time in a while, new purchases mean ive got too many GB's than little Dan the ipod can handle.
To try and sort this out, I have clicked "Manually manage songs and playlists".
I know want to update my ipod but I can't see how I can, can't click on the "update ipod" bit in the File section.
So I thought the answer would be to click back on Automatically update. Upon clicking that im greeted with "Are you sure you want to enable automatic updating? All existing songs, videos, and playlists on the Ipod will be replaced with the content from your itunes library".
I'm guessing this means that everything will be wiped and it will start adding all my songs over again?
Back to the first bit, how do you update the ipod when you have it on manual update?
Cheers batch for coming in (you always were my favorite Wigan supporter btw). Your reply makes no sense to me.
I seemed to missed a chuck of information from my opening post, been feeling a bit ill today and must have completely checked out for a while.
When I changed it to manual, I unticked loads of songs which I do not want on my ipod anymore but I would like to keep them on my itunes.
Now I think I have under 28gb of music on there, I would like for itunes to update the new songs onto my ipod.
I can't see any function/button which will update the ipod.

Hopefully that reads better and makes more sense.
you can sort the songs by when they were added if thats any help
Yeah, where your library is bigger than the capacity of your Ipod, you need to manually manage your songs.
I have a couple of playlists of all time faves, one for full albums.
Then, I've added a couple of smart playlists; 1 for new songs (filter by new in 30 days). 1 for unrated (as it says) and 1 for tracks not listened too very often.
Set your ipod to update manually using these playlists, and there you have it. Works for me
Thanks all and all duly noted.
I gave up with it earlier, will sort it all out tomorrow.
Spent a few hours trying to go through and unticking things that I don't really listen to now, then switching back over to automatic, every time it just told me there wasn't space.
I'm either going to do what's suggested in here or delete it all and start again

I find thats the best way. I've done that a couple of times.
Once i even deleted all the MP3's, that i'd ripped from albums, from my HDD and just started from scratch. </BLOCKQUOTE>Yeah I did that. Only I was gutted to find that the other half had sold most of my deleted CD copies on ebay afterwards
