Used to work with a lad who’d never heard of Monty Python and assumed Life of Brian was some documentary.

That is truly shocking - when I lived in the Middle East, Americans used to tease me about how stupid Brits are - apparently the majority of us can't point to the UK on a map of the world etc.

When I first returned to England I was living in Epping when I met a girl that believed conception was a state of mind, and contraception was only a necessity "'cos you just can't trust men!"
 She wasn't even blonde!

I had always believed she was the stupidest person in the world, yet I think she would know who the President of the USA is!

Unfortunately it doesn't require any intelligence whatsoever to procreate, so all these genes get passed on.

my last job, i was working as a programmer for a major high street bank. in my office there were three guys with masters degrees and one with a phd who had actually had an academic career before he went into business.

when the pc world advert saying 'this is the MOST POWERFUL LAPTOP we've EVER sold!!!!!11' came out they were *all* taken in by it. they actually thought it meant pc world should be taken seriously as a vendor of extremely powerful laptops and that the current models represented some kind of significant increase in processing power over those sold by their rivals.

in fact it's pretty obvious that every single new pc that comes out at pc world is more powerful than the models it replaces. so every time a new line comes out, it's automatically 'this is the MOST POWERFUL LAPTOP we've EVER sold!!!!!11'. morons.

that's a bit off topic like since none of the people in question were particularly youthful.

Why's that? It says survival of the fittest, not smartest. If higher intelligence doesn't give you a better shot at procreation then it's not a favored trait. If anything, modern society with its safety guards and rewards for all kinds of intellectually challenged persons is making us dumber, not smarter, which is basically the premise of the movie Idiocracy.
