I have had most of the problems mentioned here and for me it completly ruins the game, one or two problems I can handle but this is just getting beyond a joke. Anyway how about this for a bug get to my second season and there are no league fixtures whats that about.
I am going slightly off topic here but thinking about it the entire slow/fast thing relating too quality of chances, well it does not make massive amounts of sense.
If the ball is played around at a high tempo should the opposing team not be pulled out of shape and then when the ball comes to the striker how does it matter how fast the build up was? when he has it in a good position the tactic has done its job, it is up to the striker.
I honestly cannot see how this 'change your tactics to turn 15-20 shots a game into goals' works, sure there is a long shot bug so the stats on shots:good chances are skewed badly, but still, a tactic should never have any affect on a striker finishing a chance, only on how many chances are created.
The entire, tweak your tactics and your strikers will start scoring 1on1s etc makes no sense to me at all.
Overall though I would say FM2008 has got a lot of potential to be one of the best in the series, it just needs these easy to fix problems to be sorted. And they are easy to fix, makes me wonder how the testers could ever have missed the stupidly high rate of disallowed goals, and the closing down bug in the first place.
Personally I find this the best match engine yet (after second beta patch) and that is what makes the game the best available. I do feel my tactics influence what goes on. It's getting close to being an amazing match engine. How complex a game is football and how well (largely) is it replicated. I bow my head!
But, a lot of the other areas are pretty ropey in comparison (you can ask your teenage reserve player for advice on signings but not your assistant, you can't tell a player why they've been dropped, you can comment on the overall match performance but not the second half comeback, if you switch 2 players you have to change all of their instructions, you have to see what the AM makes of team talks rather than see it yourself (tiresome), limited player interaction, training, media interaction development etc.).
I guess what I'm saying is I'm glad si have tried to make the match engine better (and risked making mistakes in doing it), knowing it'll get there after patch. Disappointed by lack of improvements elsewhere. B or 2:1 for FM08.

hyperion666 - I totally agree with you. I am a Manager in real life and creating chances can be best defined as getting the ball and player into the right areas to get shots on goal, NOT as has been stated here many times to convert those chances. That in my view is one of two attributes, the natural ability to score, or good technical coaching to take those chances.
When this happens with my players, we would look at their technique, composure and confidence.
We would NOT change tactics as we are getting the player and ball where we want them, otherwise these chances wouldn't be created.
I do think that needs looking into.
One possible answer, and I stress possible, is to have a good coach on shooting with high technical skills.
You know, I agree with most of what has been said here but to me it all comes down to one thing in the end: the score. And from I've seen with Ajax and ManCity (both patched) is that scores are realistic in the end. They do reflect whether you managed to win or not, despite the bugs. For example yesterday I lost to SheffUtd in the Carling Cup quarter-final, winning 2:0 and losing 2:4 in extra time. Sure, I had the "closing down bug" when they scored their third, but you know - in the end I totally deserved to lose. I screwed up my tactics and my team selection thinking it'd be a breeze. I didn't react to Sheff altering their tactics to try to equalize. All that led to their win. So while I might have been disappointed by the bug, I understand I deserved to lose. Same thing when you have 10 chances on goal and still end up drawing 0:0. Sure, it's annoying but in the end I deserved it.
I just found that the game both reflects the true result and makes it challenging. You know what I mean... Had their not been a 2D match engine (only text), none of this moaning would have happened. It's just that we get annoyed when we SEE these 2D circles, not the match itself.
The game itself rewards your effort, is quite fair, and challenging.
Can't imagine how good it will be after a couple of patches (I reckon we'll get another one after Christmas).
And this engine is miles better than 07, bar the closing down bug. It's much more realistic in terms of actual play and how the players act.
