On my first year with Monaco the team did very well, won the cup and came third in the league. I got more money, bought three class players and sarted the second year. All of a sudden the team was ****. Couldn't score to save their lives and was conceding ridiculous goals (30 yard shots, "that's his first goal ever for..." or "scores in a bizzare fashion" etc.). Next thing you know all the players lost faith in their manager and were crying in despair. Naturally, I cheated heavily and won lots of games in a row to get the team up again, so no problem. My question is how did that happen? Same team, cup winners, confident, well trained and suddenly nothing works. Any explanations?
It could be that in your second season, the AI mangers have sussed how you play and have made amendments to their tactics to counter yours- try making some adjustments to either your formation or your team instructions and see how that goes.
try to use a new tactic or a simple alteration of yours. On very rare occasion you can use same tactics next season since the AI counter your old one. Since in france try some of the winger one's, works better there than casual 4-4-2
Well, look at Formula 1... Renault, quality last season, nowhere this season... ditto Jenson Button... sometimes things just don't go as well... so you've got to find a new tactic, and a better racing team!
The 2nd seasons is always harder. Or, to put it differently, the first season is always the easiest because of the reason FrazT gives (the AI managers suss your tactics)

have to desagree there, my 2nd season is being much easier and my main team is almost the same, formation is also the same most of the times, and tactical instructions were a bit tweaked. i think the trick is to see what you can improve in your team and fix it. bringing new players and start playing with them is bad because they need time to fit in the team and the playing style, even though when it's an AI team the new signins play very well in their first games, but that's another story... when i sign a players i usually loan him to a team where they can play many games, after one year or 6 months i call it back and he's ready to go to be a sub, of course i dont make this with world class players... i think you can say i'm always thinking in the next season when i'm starting a new one, i mean i'm at the 2nd season and the signins i made are for the 3rd season.
I don't think it's reasonable that a team should change their tactics every year in order to confuse the AI. On the contrary, a tactic that is played a lot should be so refined that would work better. Players knowing where everyone is in the pitch, automated moves etc.
I realised what happened to my game though as I was flicking through the confidence pages. To my surprise I saw that the board expects me to win the league. "How did that happen?" I wondered and then I remembered that that was the goal I set at the start of the year to get more funds, hahaha! A bad idea, I know now, because the game doesn't like that arrogance and gives you a realy hard time.
There is obviously some setting that says you're get hell if you even think of winning the league. Unfortunately for it, I decided I will!
The point is in the 2nd year, your player might get complacent(which affect overall performance), other teams may play more conservative against you (which reduces your goals) and player's morale will be more down when losing since expectation is higher.
