Default Beta Patch & testing

Yep its a rant, sorry people.

When FM2008 came out people complained about the lack of closing down. I actually found the match engine pretty rewarding and realistic, building a couple of tactics to counter the issue. The new game was superb out the box, I found people saying it unplayable, making no sense to me. Then after a season of enjoyment I see that the European Championships have teams in it that didn't even qualify. As i'm not playing international football i'm not too bothered, even though it makes no sense to see Finland winning it from San Marino!

Season two and my reserves fixtures vanish after the first game, and a few leagues running in view only have no fixtures.

A day later the patch comes in to view, in Beta terms so I load up and start a new game. Now the match engine has gone back to cheating. Now I know people don't like that word, but missing 10 sitters in a game, every game becomes a joke, and it has nothing to do with tactics, if tinkering with tactics to create less chances to score more goals is the way to manage then the game isn't realistic. When you see players with high pace and accerlation being out paced by a donkey that can't run when the tactics of the AI goes gung ho is a cheat. Sorry but why does forward with jumping of 5 and heading of the same, gets cained by your centre back of 14 each for 80 minutes, then the AI goes gung-ho and he can't win sod all in the air!!

So anyway back to the patch. The game runs at a crawl now for some reason, processing takes for ever, when pre-patch it runs like a dream. I played 14 games in the conference, and every team, and I say every team, has conceded or scored 5 goals between them every game. In 3 sets of fixtures, 12 games in those sets we see 84, 91 and 87 goals. Rubbish where have all these goals come from?? Its unrealistic that I have suffered four, yes four 5-5 draws, and in all 5 I am 5-nil up and what happens, yep the cheat of defenders and midfielders doing stupid things, and the other team putting away its only 5 chances!!!!!!!!! This isn't realistic, its rubbish and its not about tactics, its about how the AI turns into uber successfull and makes your players play like idiots when it suits it!! Make it hard, but don't make it predictably flawed! And please I don't want some bright spark going prove it. Don't need to prove nothing! I also don't need a lecture on tactics either when I have slowed the play down and bought on an extra defensive midfielder!

Why do players just stand around with the ball doing nothing??? Player clean through and no one within 20 yards and he just stands their and doesn't move and has the ball taken off him. Plaese don't tell me that is tactics either, where does it say in the instructions, stand like a statue??

Why in the beta patch are corner takers, free kick takers and penalty takers not taking the set peice? Why when in my instructions do a I have a centre back taking free kicks outside the box when his instruction is to stay back and he passes the free kick out for a throw 50 yards behind where it is taken???

Morale in the patch has turned into a nightmare, how is it I find my players happy and not losing yep morale is shot to bit and very poor all the time?? I can see no reason in the patch for the poor morale, could pre-patch and in FM2007, but not in the beta patch, it needs turning down.

Red Cards, yep i'm getting them, but they are because i'm averaging 7 yellow cards again, and a player is getting a second. Having turned the tackling right down to easy to experiment, it makes no difference, this wasn't a problem pre-patch, now its a nightmare!

I'm not actually blaming SI games here, i'm blaming the testers! Why in the last few games have such horrendous bugs not been picked up??? I'm asking a perfectly fair question here. If I remember last year Neil or Paul made a statement in one of the threads that they would look at the testing process for the next game, did they? It seems to me that the testers just seem to be getting the game earlier than the rest! Harsh, okay, so I know different computers and the way things happens vary, but come on, please tell me why the testers miss a number of these:

Fixtures not showing up
Non qualifiers in the European Championships finals
Keeper instructions changing after a you make a sub
Getting promoted twice and the board not giving you a new contract as you didn't meet the aims of challenging for promotion.
Ball height looks false
Board unhappy when you sign a favoured person
Disallowed goals, far to many
Board and fans being upset when we win a game comfortably, espically when I beat a team 2 divisions above me
Fans still being unhappy with a signing you made months ago, yet prasing him repeatedly for being great
Player gets hattrick and only gets a 7
And this a favourite of mine, you win the game 2-0 and after the match it says you lost and the results and league table show you have!! This has happen a few times now.

I'm ever so sorry for the rant, but the problem I have is pre patch the game itself was very enjoyable but bugs coming up made the game unrealistic or certain leagues unplayable.

Go with the patch and the match engine turns in to a joke again, game goes mega slow and morale is broke, actually forget broke its shot to bits.

I've been a very loyal fan of the series, and I will not come out with pure rubbish about taking the game back to the shop, but will once again wait for patches. But come on guys some of these bugs and issues are unforgivable, and I know i'm about to get seriously attacked by the testers, but really the whole process needs to be looked at!

Can we have the pre-patch game play, without the bugs to fixtures and competitions, and not the morale, stupid goal scoring and comebacks??

I have to say i'm totally fed up!

Oh, one last moan, sorry!

Why in the beta patch are all the player values for youngsters and reserves gone through the roof??

I managed to pick up some young preimership kids for £0 and 50% sell on as they were transfer listed for around 250k. Now in the patch they are valued at 5-7 million? Player values have shot up in the patch.

Ok its a rant but at least it is articulate.

Why not have a look in the bugs forum, where some or all of these have been mentioned and add your weight to the threads there and then the SI staff will be aware of the depth of the problem- in here, this is umlikely.

Man, be patient - I'm sure SI is working as hard as they can to iron out all the bugs and problems. FM is a big game, and so there bound to be bugs in the first versions.

I think you're confused, this is not a beta of the demo or a beta of the game, this is a game already on the street. That it can have bugs I agree, but that a patch or a beta patch adds to them I can't agree with you.
This just shows how losely tied things are within the code and why maybe there aren't so many changes thru the last versions. A feeling of, touching here but never really sure where it will popup.

And how refreshing it is too .

In SI's defence, they're dammed if they do and dammed if they don't.

I agree with the spirit of your post, (if not the contents in it's entirety). The guys are looking at a number of the points that you bring up, but it appears that it just wasn't possible to get them into this first initial "quick" patch.

There are far too many goals, but SI have only had 1 working day since release so far, so give them a little yime to collate the info and work out what is what. Remember that every time they fix 1 bug there is a chance that they create a host of new ones.

Speaking of new bugs, you also didn;t mention the finance bug that the patch has caused that wasn't in the game at all pre-patch.

I think the they're doing their best as vthey do every year. The time to judge the game will be after the next patch. Many people will argue that "I've paid my money bla bla bla bla" but to be honest, DON'T PAY YOUR MONEY THEN UNTIL THE PATCH IS OUT!

The game was pretty good pre-patch and only the closing down and lower league attendance bug caused me real problems. Post patch the closing down seems better, yet there are now goals flying in everywhere. There also seems to be an issue with AI managed teams and tactics after they have been reduced to either 10 or 9 men.

I'm tirec of reading SI bashing threads, but where a point is well made and articulate like this original post, it;s enjoyable to read even if I do not agree 100% with it.

Major Raver .

There is a world of difference in threads, well written, making what the poster considers to be valid points about the game, and the others which are pointless, foul mouthed and ill-informed.

SI will always listen to constructive criticism, even if they dont agree with it and you will see from the replies so far, other users will do this as well. You are entitled to your opinion and in truth most of us would agree at least in part with some of your points.

The only thing i'm bashing SI for is the way testing has been done before release. How can the people doing the testing not see many of the issues? This is happening every year now with serious flaws!!! Some of the flaws are understandable that they got missed, but some are just so painfully obvious, how can those mistakes not be passed on to the guys at SI games by those testing? Are those testing to worried to point out massive issues. I really enjoyed the game out of the box, the match engine worked and what I did had an effect, now it doesn't. Before someone bleats out my tactics being rubbish with the patch for my reason to moan, I lost 3 games, and those 3 games I lost after I had won, when the game got to the result screen. As for all the 5-5 draws, sorry thats a major flaw. "These tactical experts" got on my wick defending every flaw with the engine with a detailed lecture on how my goalkeepers mentality slider was one notch to far up the left backs @rse!

The Beta-patch was a brave move by SI and if it manages to make the first patch spot on then i'm all for that brand of testing, because they are now getting the feedback of what is going on. Its still ashame that so many of those threads are littered with not on my screen, not in my game, or your tactics are rubbish and you lose so you blame the game!! These people sometimes stop real issues coming to the attention of SI games!
