As I say above I dont like it but theres plenty of people on this thread that do so its not a waste... </BLOCKQUOTE>
Time is money - you bring in other people to do some coding for you then that's money that could have been spent on bringing in coders to work on other parts of the game.
Facegen is an utterly superficial part of the FM experience - this game has never been about graphics but here we are lauding over a graphical addition that in no way affects the game mechanic. Personally I find it jarring that some players have photos, others have a blank outline and the rest are a caricature.
What about all the aspects of FM that are still sub-par? (I'm looking at YOU repetetive and nonsensical media interaction!) If you gave me the choice FM08 could have had an array of other work done to make it better and would have had a profoundly more positive effect on the game than this rather meaningless sideshow. Hence I personally think it was a waste.
Cheers,
Andy </BLOCKQUOTE>
I very rarely criticize SI but I'll have to agree with Tickers. He's spot on imo.
Also on a side note I understand people thinking it's a cool addition (probably the younger players, or the newer players - not the hardcore fans anyway) and that was probably SI's idea. I imagine they figured that it would bring in more extra customers hence revenue and profit than it cost them to bring a few programmers to code facegen.

I like facegen but I would like to see it
A. Replace EVERY blank profile picture if this is possible...(probably a lot of work eh?)
B. Used for the manager to create a face and then not be 45 and look 25.
C. Possibly replace real photos one day

As for a superficial addition, arguably many things in the game are superficial and are there to add atmosphere and ambience.
| My earlier point on cost still holds, regardless of who it is doing the coding. An amount of money would have been paid to bring Facegen into FM08, you sacrifice time to link the code of facegen to the various bits of code present in the game (morale, age, going through that goth phase) and you have to design the new skin to prominently display this feature.
On your second point - on superficial features. Previous new features of FM have not launched themselves on a feature that actually doesn't effect the game at all and many might simply turn off due to the faces looking a bit plastic and crap. Interaction (media, player, manager) isn't superficial because such things aren't important in football - they're superficial because they generally don't work very well, and are repetetive nonsensical and often ignored simply because it's the safest thing to do.
With all of the other areas of FM that need some improvement I can't see Facegen as anything more than a rather unwanted sideshow. If the football affecting bits in the game were working well then fantastic - add in some new pointless bits to make me happy, but since a lot of things aren't rosey with the FM series and with a lot of accusations of stagnation and a lack of movement forward from FM, adding utterly optional bits isn't going to help the series move forward.
Cheers
Andy

Andy, you have made up your mind. However you assert your opinion as fact and it is far from that.

| But then who doesn't on the internet these days? I did have a statement in my original post about that but I tend to rewrite stuff quite a lot and I think it went on the editing floor. I lurk mostly and so it often takes something to really get me annoyed before I post - facegen is actually one of them. However in fairness as everything flying around the internet is opinion (and remains so until someone actually cites their references - so long as it's not Wikipedia) I don't think we should deal with too many disclaimers.
However I'm not on the internet in order to make enemies and come across as a smug bastard, I do this incredibly successfully in the real world so I should possibly reclarify my position - I don't hate Facegen, I just think it's a pointless addition and I would much prefer SI to work on the things that currently are wrong with the game. However as any project on a limited time and financial budget has limitations I feel Facegen will have had an impact - so almost by default since more important things (to me) have been missed I do have to dislike it.
Cheers
Andy

I think the facegen pictures look good but would look infinitely more realistic if the game added a background (e.g. pitch & stands) and shoulders & collar in the team colours - I don't think that would be beyond them and would make the players look like footballers rather than floating heads |
