I'm not convinced FIFA would put up much of an objection if it's to play for the nation in which he is resident (eg if he's playing in England and wants English nationality).
Even if they do, it'll just stampede towards the European Court of Human Rights with precedent easily cited.

I'm with you, I'd make the birth thing a rule frankly. But I fear we aren't far away from seeing it happen.
Sad, but true, although the SFA already chucked it out and hopefully they would again, and I would welcome it if they did even if it meant going backwards.... again!

no he didn't. you were saying
"5 years in england and you are eligible for a british pasport thus eligible to play for england",

while the rest of us, including ATW, said that you must be born in the Nation you want to play for, which is complete different from what you said.

go back and read the thread again and you will see wat was said is the same as wat i said. the rule is there and can be used, as mentioned above ther is no law against it. do you think if it was possible for someone like messi to spend five years in england and then be eligible the fa wouldnt exploit it like dave c said.
i would be interested to know if this gentlemans agreement is coded into the game.

Cudman, you claimed that 5 years got you English nationality. Which ATW and myself, and others, have tried to explain is an inaccurate and incredibly simplified version of reality.

but the fact remain is that it hasn't happen yet. we don't have a case where a foreign national, live in UK for five years and try to play for any one of the nation. It will be interesting, of cos, to what will happen if a foreign star gain the UK nationality and want to play for england. But until that happen, the "bloodline rule" should stand (which stated a player or his parents or granparents must be born in the home nations in order to represent for them)

if gaining a countries nationality doesnt make you eligible for that county jimbokav, explain how dudu is playing for croatia?
Wrong.

As I've already stated, because he has a Croatian passport.
