| the home coutnries have a different rules. having a british passport will not automatically entitle them to play for any of them unless they, parents or one of the grandparents born there.

| Dudu is playing fot Croatia because he has a Croatian passport.
In this instance, Cudicini would hold a British Passport and would be able to reprsent a British Team if ever there were one formed, but until there is, he is unable to play for England, N,Ireland, Scotland & Wales because he is not English, N.Irish, Scottish or Welsh.

I thought I would let everyone else deal with it, as you and Nobby tried. I read the title and knew what it would be about.
OK, but since you asked nicely...
To play International football for one of the home nations you must have been born in the Nation you want to play for (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales) or you’re Parents or you’re Grandparents. This is called for no better word the Bloodline rule. (This is the same for all Nations in the world)
You can also play for the Home Nations, by way of vote if you are born in one of the many Crown Dependency Nations which have no FIFA Affiliated Nation to their Name.
If you are entitled to play for two Home Nations, as often is the case, if you have played for one at any level from Under 21's down, you can change affiliation as long as you are not 21 or over (this is the same for all Nations in the world)
For Other Nations (Outside the Home Nations)
If law of your land entitles anyone from certain Nations to a Passport for just being born there (see France) or of a certain religion (see Israel) then you can by right play for that Nation (Home Nations do not use this rule with their former Empire/Commonwealth but as mentioned above certain Nationalities are different
If you have lived in a Nation for a certain amount of time then you can apply for a Passport and then be entitled to play for that Nation. The Home Nations does not take up this rule as our circumstances are different from other Nations.
Now, I'm going back to banging my head of the wall until the next, exact same topic is opened up |

It should be made clear though, there's no legal basis to this. As others have said, it's basically a "Gentlemans Agreement" and, as such, will probably get broken within the enxt 5 years.
If some 21 year-old star decides, after being in Arsenal's academy for 5 years, he wants to play for England it'd be interesting to see what happens.

Very true but I'm sure FIFA will do everything they can to block it as, what has been mentioned there is no such thing as an English, Scottish Citizen etc, and until we can rightfully put in one or the other on our Passport I believe FIFA, and the Anti Home Nation lobby within FIFA will demand something be done to stop it
Although that will not mean it will be stopped, but please god, this would be one thing I will agree with the Anti Home Nation Brigade on

| You're not suggesting that anyone of the Jewish Religion can claim Israeli Nationality are you ?

I'm not convinced FIFA would put up much of an objection if it's to play for the nation in which he is resident (eg if he's playing in England and wants English nationality).
Even if they do, it'll just stampede towards the European Court of Human Rights with precedent easily cited.
I'm with you, I'd make the birth thing a rule frankly. But I fear we aren't far away from seeing it happen.

Well technically yes! Look up the Law of Return. Although I have not done much research in it is basically any one of Jewish decent (from grandparent down) and is practising is entitled to settle and claim Israeli Nationality
I might be wrong but sure I read or heard that somewhere
