I have had it with this game. This version of Football manager is the worst ever. It is either full of bugs or they have made the game so stupid and complicated its annoying. All won't agree but small facts like having strikers with finishing of 16 and 17 miss from point blank range all the time, teams you should beat end up beating your 4-0 defenders with high marking and jumping stats getting beat in the air by someone 5ft something. I finally went over the edge I went to stamford bridge and lost 4-0 despite having 52% of the ball 16 shots on goal. In reality manchester united wouldn't go to chelsea have a lot of ball and miss that many chances. Check out the screen dump below. The sooner this game goes without a patch the worse it will get.
Some will continue to defend this game but the previous 2 versions of this game were much better and more realistic. This game is like fifa 08, overcomplicated and ridiculous.
I agree that something has gone badly wrong with the match engine. Player stats count for nothing anymore, it's all about moral and team talks, and tactics, which don't work.
the game needs to provide better feedback as to why this is happening, we all know its tactics, but what about them? Is it the tempo is too high so when chances come our strikers snatch at them? Is it too many long shots? Is it morale is low and players are going through phase where they couldnt hit a cows arse with a banjo. The commentry or the ass. man. or something needs to let us know so we can change things during the game or for the next game. Just my opinion.
Officially? Did SI hold an award ceremony or something? Why didn't I hear about that? Would have worn a killer suit and all.. Oh well, there's always next years awards, I hope
the point on feeback is interesting chris. Why doesn't the assistant produce match reports to help you out. Pointers on what areas let you down and stuff. What good is the assistant unless you go on holiday.
Considering that you both had the same amount of shots, and you only hit the target with less than a quarter of your shots while Chelsea hit the target with half of theirs, it seems pretty reasonable that they won, no matter how annoying it may be.
Finishing isn't the only attribute that comes into scoring goals by the way, others are also linked to this which may affect how a striker copes when given the chance to have a shot. Any of these may be affecting your strikers ability to put the chances way. Missing all the time when they are only a couple of yards out with no challenge coming in (if that is what is happening) sounds pretty dodgy though. How are your strikers doing goal-wise? It might be a confidence/morale (which is flawed at the moment) thing, I don't really know.
I would comment on the small players beating huge players to headers, but I'm not sure how that works any more (or if it has changed since previous versions) as I remember seeing a post by someone from SI explaining it for FM08 and I simply can't find it when searching. It's on the boards somewhere though if you really want to find out.
Possession does seem a little iffy at the moment in FM08 however. I have a pre-season friendly where I won 8-0 against a terrible team and only saw 44% of the ball, whilst having something like 28 shots with 19 on target and the opposition only having 2 shots in the whole game. It seems a little unrealistic that you could create that many chances without having the majority of the possession.
You really need to focus on the 2D match results. That is how you determine whether tempo is too high or too low, whether there are too many long shots, etc. The game stats cannot explain everything, so it's critical to pay close attention to the 2D highlights and notice any tendencies. This is how I make all of my tactical adjustments. I literally do not look at game stats for my clubs. I focus solely on what I see on the pitch.
However, the game stats can help you draw some conclusions as well. For example, the above screenshot clearly shows that Leeds lost the vast majority of the headers and was also very poor at completing crosses. That's an indication that crosses into the box for goal scoring opportunities were not connecting, whereas Chelsea was dominating in the air and had more than twice the success of Leeds on crosses.
If you start relying on an assistant manager to tell you what changes you should make from week to week, then you might as well not play the game. Then you're not really managing the club.
My recommendation is that you start a new saved game after the patch and manage a lower league club. If you can figure out how to win at the lower levels, you'll be better prepared for handling a larger club.
