| I know it would never happen in reality, but according to the rules of the competition it could technically occur. And, IIRC, didn't Japan get invited once or twice? So it's not just American countries...

Japan played once, but it was a one-off thing and nobody here liked to see Japan playing it. Som the fact Japan played the competition once means it's less likely a situation like this happen again.
