Default eps issue

You could try distilling the EPS and opening the PDF in Quark. Or try
flattening the PS image instead of merging

Do the blocks only appear when the document is on screen, or is it both on screen and when you print?

There could be a couple things going on here. Your EPS file might not have been saved with a preview, in which case Quark might not read it and just show a grey box. If it's still happening when you are printing, then you should try printing to a postscript printer or checking to make sure the file is linked correctly.
