Nearly fell off my chair when I read this, but Winona Ryder has been announced at Star Trek.com as playing the mother of Spock in the Star Trek "prequel" due out in a year. She's only six years older than Heroes' Zachary Quinto, qho plays young Spock, but she does have a pretty impressive CV (and criminal record...).

With JJ Abrahms, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana and now Ryder, does anyone really give this a chance?

On the one hand, I'd like to see Star Trek capture a new generation of fans, but on the other, it is a huge risk, with a budget of over $150 million - far more than any in the series' history. Better to fade out quietly than go out with a massive flop...

Already started filming a few days ago, actually.

It also has Rachel Nichols from Alias, Karl Urban and Simon Pegg from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

There should be at least one more "name" as a captain.
