Girl, 14, had sex with man after internet grooming
A SCHOOLGIRL had sex with a man more than twice her age after he "groomed" her through an internet chatroom.
David Lyness did not hide from the 14-year-old his true age and the fact that he had children when they exchanged details on the teen site.
After an initial meeting in a park in Huddersfield when nothing untoward happened they kept up further contact by e-mail and phone, during which she revealed she was a virgin.
Philip Adams, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court yesterday that Lyness asked her if she wanted to lose her virginity and she replied that every girl did.
They arranged a further meeting and on that occasion he drove her to his flat in Leeds where they had sex. His offences came to light after the girl confessed what had happened when her mother became concerned about her behaviour.
Lyness, 39, of Shakespeare Grange, Burmantofts, Leeds, was jailed for 30 months after admitting meeting a child following sexual grooming and sexual activity with her on February 6 last year.
Passing sentence, Judge Alistair McCallum said Parliament had changed the law in 2003 after recognising that sexual grooming using the internet was becoming a prevalent and serious offence.
Although he accepted Lyness had not put the girl under any pressure and had told her the truth about his age and position, there had to be a jail term to deter others.
Mr Adams said the girl told police that after her initial meeting with Lyness in Huddersfield in January last year she thought him "nice."
Their second meeting was on February 6 after the girl was driven into Huddersfield by her father and brother to meet a friend. The friend was aware of what was going on and stayed with the teenager until Lyness picked her up in his van.
He then drove her to his flat near St James's Hospital where in the bedroom they had sex three times. He used a condom for protection and the girl said later he was considerate in the way he treated her.
Afterwards he drove her back to Huddersfield. The girl admitted what had happened to her mother a couple of days later and the police were informed.
John Batchelor, for Lyness, said he had legitimate access to the computer and was not looking for the contact that occurred.
His daughter had accessed the site and while he accepted that was how he had first got some of the girl's details, she had then provided him with her e-mail address and phone number for text and other messages.
He accepted the seriousness of his position and that a jail sentence would also cost him his job.

A paedophile has been jailed after police in the United States traced images on the internet back to the man's Nottinghamshire home.
Richard Jepson was said by the judge to have "provided an electronic highway for an evil cancer".
Jepson, 33, from Mansfield, admitted charges of making, possessing and distributing thousands of images of children.
During the police investigation he had claimed he was on a one-man crusade to track down and trap internet paedophiles because he was disillusioned with the justice system.
His activities came to light when anti-vice officers in America traced the images held on offenders' computers to Jepson's home computer.
Grace Hale, prosecuting, said officers found 5,000 images and 600 movies stored on the server.
Ms Hale said that police, over a 13-day period, logged 1,278 visits by computer users looking for pornographic images.
Sentencing Jepson to five years in jail, Judge Stephen Waine told him: "You provided an electronic highway for an evil cancer to spread around the world which will help to destroy or maim many a young life.
"It is difficult to think of any nastier offences than those for which you were responsible."
There must be something in the air

It appears I'm a pretty tasty right winger and have two brothers I don't even know about. Judging by this report, the opposition got well and truly "Pickled"

WOODMAN Batley Carr lost a two-goal interval lead as Hartshead battled back for a deserved point in an exciting Heavy Woollen Gate League Division One clash at Sands Lane last Sunday.
After a minute’s silence in memory of referee Steve McLaughlin, a Neil Pickles brace and an Andrew Pickles header seemed to have put the home side in command. But a Martin Ellis penalty, to add to Jonathan Gould’s first half free-kick, got Hartshead back in touch before Matthew Cox’s super strike saw them level.
Both sides spurned chances in a thrilling end-to-end clash but a point apiece was about right on the balance of play.
Alex Pickles was a threat on the right with teasing crosses and he set up Woodman’s opener after three minutes. His cross found Neil Pickles on the edge of the area and although goalkeeper Rob Ellis got a hand to the low drive it hit the right post and crossed the line.
Goalkeeper Ellis was to prove a key figure with some superb second half saves while the pacy duo of striker Cox and Mark Addy had Woodman on the back foot.
Cox drove just over after a quick free-kick while a superb crossfield pass by Addy found Will Atkin on the left and his low drive was well saved by goalkeeper Andrew Walker at his near post.
Woodman responded with a Simon Westbury shot held by the goalkeeper while Alex Pickles fired over after neat passing before Hartshead’s Cox held off two men on a terrffic run before his shot produced a superb save by Walker.
The Woodman goalkeeper was alert to stop a curling Gould effort but Woodman rallied and after goalkeeper Ellis saved well from an Andrew Pickles shot from an acute angle they made it 2-0 in the 37th minute.
Alex Pickles’s corner found Andrew Pickles who headed home from close range but Hartshead hit back and after Walker held a fine strike from Nick Glover they were awarded a free-kick 20 yards out.
The Woodman wall jumped to allow Gould’s shot through and although Walker got a hand to it the ball nestled in the net.
But Woodman were quick to respond and in the final minute of the half Martin Ellis was adjudged to have handled a Frazer Endicott cross and Neil Pickles sent the goalkeeper the wrong way with the penalty.
Alistair McIver went close for the home side as he saw a shot cleared off the line but Hartshead were back in it five minutes after the break as Scott Broadley was fouled in the area and Martin Ellis fired home from the spot.
Cox then held off a challenge to race clear but his shot was saved by Walker who then tipped over the follow-up strike by Broadley.
