Seen neither Ratinho. Both look good. Will be DVD jobs now though.
Ah, Philippe Nahon. A name I've neglected for a little while. Must be a juicy, sweaty Euro-perv role in the offing soon.

Quite a few great films this year, though not much from the indie circuit has interested me for a while. Eastern Promises was inexplicably brilliant and definitely had this year's best fight scene. Last King of Scotland was also very good, as was Pan's Labyrinth, though not quite FotY material. Atonement was also pretty good, but not quite the masterpiece that has been made out. Hot Fuzz was great, not least for the return of Tim Dalton to the screen. Stardust was surprisingly good (though seeing De Niro reduced to a drag act was, while funny, quite depressing). Tarantino's Death Proof worked better in the shorter cut but was still very clever and had that amazing old-fashioned car duel (albeit with a chick on the hood). I think my FotY, even taking into account the fact that I can't remember a lot of the films I've seen this year, is unquestionably Ratatouille, a wonderful and magical masterpiece inspiring the sort of warm happy feeling all great animated/childrens films can.

wasnt that last year? (as in 2006) </BLOCKQUOTE>
Well, it premiered at Venice last year, may have had a release in the States near the tail-end of '06, but was certainly released in the UK in '07, so to me (and most here obv) an '07 film.
No definitives, but I mentioned some in the film thread - Climates, Night of the Sunflowers, IE, Away From Her - which would grace any year.
Few more in the running (note: most of these were from the first half of 07, when I still had some vague notion of a cinema-going life) - Longing, Old Joy, Science of Sleep, The Lives of Others, Mutual Appreciation, Private Fears in Public Places, Funny Ha Ha, Little Red Flowers, Conversations with Other Women, Iraq in Fragments, Black Book, Ghosts, Zodiac, Born and Bred, The Consequences of Love, Hallam Foe, A Prairie Home Companion, A Mighty Heart, This Is England.
Shitload more to catch.
For '08, looking forward to: Juno, No Country for Old Men, Paranoid Park, Son of Rambow, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Man From London, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Lust Caution, Be Kind Rewind, My Blueberry Nights. </BLOCKQUOTE>
Did Funny Ha Ha only come out in the UK this year?
Geez, that film has been out in America for ageeeeeeeeeees. Granted, limited release, but still.
Miles better than Mutual Appreciation I thought.

Bourne Ultimatum was a tad over rated if you ask me... (prepares to be lynched)
But my fav of 2007 was defo Sunshine, twas fb!
| Sunshine could have been great, but that twist for the last act/final third totally changed the tone of the film and completely ruined it for me. The first half was terrific. Bourne was a duffer. Transformers was passable, though I was never a fan of the cartoon so I can see people really hating all the humour that was thrown in (I must confessed I laughed more than once though). Both Knocked Up and Superbad promised so much, yet never got out of second gear for me. Some good laughs in both, but nowhere near what I was hoping for.

The rest sadly was a morass of cheap satire, lazy plotting and shock-tactic bloodletting.
Pity. Think they were onto something with that start.
| not surprising tbh, 28 Days Later had a class start and was doing well until it just fell apart

You wouldn't need to fear a lynching for thimnking Bourne is maybe overrated, had you not followed up with the silly 'Sunshine fb' stuff.
The first half was samey sci fi stuff, the second a shambles.

| Yeah, my local indie were doing a sort of Bujalski double-bill and I presumed the films hadn't seen the light of day here before as S&S were pushing them both as kind of new.

Oh God, I forgot This Is England. What a film that was. Probably second behind Ratatouille, maybe level with Eastern Promises. In any case, much better than that rubbish Bourne. [/baiting]

Yeah i did love This is England, although it irritated me by reminding me of a TV programme from ages ago that i can't remember. I'm easily irritated.

| Haven't seen This Is England but for some reason The Grimleys seems possible? Longshot and probably a pointless post tbh.
