Just checked and Duff did play under Hodgson. But he would have been a kid then, plus it's unlikely he was talking to journos as he hasn't been around the Irish set up in a long time.

Why are you backing Venables? Since England in Euro 96 he's hardly done well with Pompey, Australia, Crystal Palace or Leeds. Did alright as an assistant to Bryan Robson at Boro, but as part of the English set up at the moment wasn't he the brains behind the 3-5-2 in Croatia, as well as playing a part in their most dissapointing of campaigns in years. His success in the 80's seems quite a long time ago.

tbf, venables did quite well with us and had the team playing good attacking, attractive football. he also made us a fairly obstinate and difficult team to beat at times. that we failed to qualify for france 98 wasn't really his fault at all.

still, his time is WELL past...
