we dont need more english players playing top flight football, we need a decent manager, who isnt afraid to drop the 'stars' when they are rubbish or cant play together.

oh, we scored! lets sit back and let them have as much of the ball as they like on the edge of our box.

Before the dirty foreigners invaded the English Leagues, 1966 and maybe 1990 were just blips on a laughably awful record in all competitions for England, see 1974, '78 and '94 especially.
So nothing has changed.

the Scottish system is brilliant, any coincidence with how well the national team is performing at the moment ?
| Possibly, but I think that is more to do with all the clubs being skint and not bringing in foreigners and relying on young players instead. Even the Old Firm are doing better in that respect.
Fact: There are more Scottish players registered for the Champions League this season than English players and there are four English teams and two Scottish teams in the competition. (This doesn't include the B-Lists before some smart arse points that out) |

It's been quite a success (IMO) in Scotland where three U21 players must be in the match 18 and has been good experience for the young players being involved with the first team on match days, even though most of the time they don't get on.
| It sounds like a good idea. Young players would more likely get opportunities at every club.
And it makes the distinction between an older english player and a young English player looking for an opportunity.
There is more benefit in having a talented young English player given an opportunity. Than clubs buying up the older established English players to comply with the limit.
So I think an age based restriction would actually have more benefit in encouraging clubs to give their youth players a go.

Would quite like to see something like Ter suggested - increase the subs to seven, and then between three and five on the squad have to be qualified to play for England.
More of a precaution against what could happen in the future than any desperate need now though.
Oh and can't be bothered to start a new thread so...
WILL THEY NEVER LEARN.
Can't believe how desperate various newspapers/radio shows are to establish MON as the clear choice if McClaren is sacked. Why ffs - he did very well at Leicester, he did well at Celtic and he's been pretty average at Villa considering they've spent a fair bit (admittedly they're improving, and I think he's done a decent job) - but bloody hell - what has he WON?
One. Carling. Cup.
Two/Three. Scottish. Titles (and presumably some cups).
Is there really the best we can get? Absolutely moronic, you'd think they would have learnt from McClaren that average Premiership managers probably won't cut it - and yes, MON is better than McClaren, and yes, he would probably do a better job but there are far better managers out there. Would they want to manage England - not sure, but let's at least try and get someone who's actually succeeded at the top level.
I know we won't know, and the Martin "Yes, I won the Carling Cup" O'Neill will undoubtedly get the job.

Oh and two of the quotes I've heard.
"If we miss out on MON this time it will be like Clough all over again."
Even better...
"It doesn't matter if he's Northen Irish, he's British."

Can see where Coppell is coming from, the Reading squad against Arsenal was absolutely packed full of quality English players iirc.

How do they get the Scottish player quota past the EU laws then?

I'm not entirely sure MON would take the job even if he was first choice for the job.
