 important: password problem with ATA HDD's also OSX!
Erik, thanks for the alert. I read the article with interest. As I didn't know about the ATA security functions and the 32 character password business at all, I posted the article on a web site for very knowledgeable Mac OS X users. I've also downloaded the kernel extension for Mac OS X which they have created but will wait on installation until I hear from folks with more informed opinions.
I also suspect that Apple will address this issue in future security updates if it is a real and present threat. So far, this is apparently one of the infinite 'proof of concept' security alerts rather than a realized threat.
