A question about broadband/having a BT line

When Broadband companies say you must have a BT line to have their broadband, does this mean you actually need to be paying for BT line, or just have access to one, and thus access to an exchange? Basically my gf has a BT line she never uses and doesnt need, could she get rid of this while keeping her broadband through AOL (yeah, I know...)?

If that line is the same number as your AOL line then no. If it is two seperate lines then yes.

You need to be paying someone for a phone line, so yes.

Depends on the company.

I'm with TalkTalk for example, and I pay £21 per month for my phone & broadband that includes paying THEM the line rental.

I don't pay BT anything.

I believe you can pay Tiscali line rental as well now, or so a customer was telling me the other week.
