i plan on getting a laptop and that soon - is there a chance i\pc world could copy the stuff from my doc
| There's a version of the recovery console available on the web that you can zip to 6 floppies, so you don't need the CD at all. That'll allow you to at least try the chkdsk utility, although there's no guarantee that will work.

| Depends if it's damage to the drive that's stopping it working, but even then i'd have thought it would have to be pretty significant to stop you getting your stuff off. The fact that you're getting somewhere on bootup means the drive hasn't failed completely.

I have recently done this for a friend - ok I'm treating recovering your documents as a priority.
1) Try booting in Safemode - back up your documents.
or
2) Slave the HDD to your laptop. (I will give you further instructions if necessary) - copy / backup your documents.
or
3) Try booting in Safemode with Command Line Prompt to perform a System Restore from the command line - backup your documents.
(*Disclaimer* System Restore should not affect your documents but isn't 100% safe.)
