I didn't really like the "sentimental" episodes as i viewed it primarily as a comedy not something i particularly wanted to emotionally invest in. I can see why people may like them as they're obviously fairly well done it's just not what i wanted from the show (especiially not every other episode).
I also found that towards the end there were a few occasionally rank episodes which were just completely awful (which often happens on shows with large writing staff) - i'm thinking the buggalo one and the "zoidberg eats a flag" one particularly.

At least they didn't go the way of Family Guy and make every other episode a sodding musical.

I think maybe the reason I find the last episode to be the best is because I found myself responding to the characters and hence the comedy therein. Extremely character-driven episodes like Obsolutely Fabulous worked for me because of that; having said that I thought that A Taste of Freedom was average and I didn't like Kif Gets Knocked Up A Notch.
More of a general point but I think because I formed an affinity for the characters the oddball stuff was good, like the two Farnsworths in The Farnsworth Parabox turning the thermostat up and down and then one saying "Well, that was pointless".

I don't mind the oddball stuff, i just think they played up to it too much by the end, at the price of better/more original jokes.

On that point I simultaneously love and hate the line "Nine, ten, a big fat hen. The name's Bender". On the one hand it's ****ing fantastic, on the other it's completely without context and seems to be 5 seconds of filler.

| Of course you wouldn't get the Freedom Day episode. It would be like an American not getting the funny in a Britcom that was had an episode based on the concept of Guy Fawkes Day
