Will she need notice to get time off work? If not then definitely don't tell her in advance, be a romantic and just tell her the night before you leave!

Anyway the moral is don't plan anything special or as a surprise, just get her a tacky, impersonal present that you could give to any girl you meet, and give it to her the day before.
She'll love you more.
No offence mate, but she was an arse, just because she didn't appreciate it, doesn't mean most girls won't. What you did sounds like it'd have my girlfriend completely blown away, I'd get the day off as well, so email for her number

For our first Valentine's Day, I researched and booked a table at a quality restaurant local to her, hired a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce, booked her a session at a beauty salon and bought her a new outfit to wear.

When she arrived home she found the bed covered in rose petals and some new lingerie neatly laid out, and chocs on the bedside table.
I also presented her with a hardback edition of a book she'd always wanted to read - it had taken me ages to track down a copy in very good condition and was not cheap.

So what was her reaction when I turned up by surprise outside her work with a bouquet of roses and a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce and champagne?

She burst into tears (not good ones) and gave me an earful, verbally and physically.
Her mood didn't improve all night, and I ended up relieved that I didn't have to find myself a cheap hotel

I'd spent weeks researching, planning and orchestrating everything; all the gifts were things I knew she wanted and one was unique (I couldn't have got it for any other girl in the world) and I'd spent over two months wages on it all.
But all the girls in the office had big cards and "Forever Friends" bears on their desks so she'd felt small and left out all day!

real moral of the story is that she was an ungrateful ****

Sadly it is true - but no I'm not still with her. The relationship didn't reach a second Valentine's Day.
That incident was the beginning of the end.

In her defence she wasn't a bad person, nor a bitch, she just wasn't quite right emotionally.
That sounds awful, I know. My friends used to remark that she seemed clingy and needy, which was probably true but not a terrible crime - I thought a bit of stability would eventually improve that.
The real problem was that once she'd perceived that she'd been wronged, she'd fall into a deep, irreversible mood - there was nothing that could change matters - even if became clear she had prematurely jumped to a wrong conclusion.
It was as though it was my fault for letting her fall into a bad mood in the first place. She was just incapable of recovering from initial disappointment.

The VD (that's Valentine's Day - not a good abbreviation really!) incident was the second such time I experienced this behaviour.
I'd invited her to spend Xmas at my home and join my extended family and close friends for our traditional Boxing Day meal.
All was good, very good in fact (she'd opened and loved her presents ), until my sister and her family came round late morning. After making a cuppa and getting out some snacks (we hadn't eaten and my sis wasn't staying) I took my niece outside to play on the trike I'd got her, while my gf was chatting to my sis and her husband.
They left after an hour and I started making lunch. Unfortunately gf had fallen into a bad mood at some point, partially because she was hungry and partially because I'd left her "alone" while I was in the garden with my niece.
Suddenly this was her "worst Xmas ever!"
She sulked for the rest of the day and the following morning demanded to go home - despite the arrangements for the day and all my family waiting to meet her.

This all makes her sound like a bitch, but really she wasn't.
