And I'm really not sure how to. Any cigarette or pipe-related jokes confirm the perpetrator as a moron, I know it has something to do with a big tin and some sawdust, the salmon is about two and a half feet long, GO!

My housemate tried to 'pan smoke' some fish with some wood from the garden. It failed miserably, and the house stank of smoke for a week.

I can guarantee you one thing, it won't work first time so go with cheaper fish the first time you do it. I'd also do it outside as it can stink the house out for days on end. I usually do it on a barbeque. Just the usual preparation like cleaning, gutting, salting and some lemon juice as this actually neutralises the fishy smell a bit.
