you could always try curing it instead of smoking it to make gavadlax, it would be a lot easier!

There was a method of campfire cooking that we used for fish.
It involved wrapping it (the fish) in foil and earth - I can't remember what it was called or exactly how to do it now).

OK, I've been out and about and I think I'm tooled up.
Managed to hire a fish kettle from the Morrisons round the corner, which is meant for poaching. However, it looks to me like it's ideal for smoking too.
It's a big fish-sized basin with a lid, and a platform with holes in it for the fish to rest on inside. If I put the wood shavings under the platform, jimmy the lid slightly open and stick it on the hob, it'll smoke things, right?
I'm quite excited.

Only one thing: If I use the kettle for smoking, will it damage the kettle? Surely not, as it's stainless steel, but if anyone knows better, jump in.

Resounding success, but not poached, not smoked.
Incredible. Still getting fat off leftovers
