To give it some credit, it has improved over the last 6-12 months - as before that it ranked amongst the worst. However, because it is free people turn a blind eye to its horrendous protection capabilities.

If you really refuse to pay for PC security, then Antivir would be a better choice, followed by AVG and then Avast.

Actually just realised you said "Best free" antivirus - whereas I thought you meant out of all of them...

Antivir is still a better free option though...

Why is it so bad ? Because of slowing down your system or more to do with doesnt do what it says it should because whenever i have used it i always thought it was ok

Also using Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic, which is free, seems to use up next to no resources and have yet to have a problem with it. Works fine on 64-bit systems also.

Finding a firewall that was free and worked fine on 64-bit was pretty awkward though, stuck with a Comodo beta at the moment, which seems okay, but I'm not sure how much confidence I have in it yet.

I put it 2nd because there's only 3 free antivirus programs, and Avast is worse than AVG

Antivir performs much better than AVG.

AVG is great for not affecting PC performance, however their detection and protection against actual viruses, and other forms of malware simply doesn not match those of leading pay-for programs (such as NOD32 for example).
