Had a look at a few of the older threads but could do with some up-to-date advice, basically need a 500GB hard-drive which is sturdy and won't break down any time soon.
Been looking a fair bit but been getting conflicting reviews for all different makes. Had a Iomega 500GB USB2.0 External Hard Drive which packed up on me but Ebuyer don't have any in stock to replace it, so will probably get a refund as most decent ones there are out of stock.
So back to square one, been looking at WD's but quite a few horror stories floating about so have all but settled on a Freecom Hard Drive 500GB External USB-2 unless anyone has had a bad experience with the company, or has a better suggestion.
Cheers guys, really need to back-up my laptop!

If anyone has any great reccomendations for a smaller (200gig would be plenty) fairly affordable option, I too would be rather greatful. Living in constant fear of losing the ol' music collection

Just look at Amazon. They have some great prices. Seagate and WD are meant to be 2 of the best, I think. My current WD 250gb has been going strong for a year now.

I've read so many horror stories on these things that if I didn't REALLY need one I wouldn't buy one. The WD's have a five-year warranty which is great, but their website is littered with people saying how the drive failed on them. It's all well and good getting it replaced but when data is lost is costs loads to get it back.
Likewise Seagate, a few of the models I've looked at tend to overheat and you end up with the dreaded 'clicking'.
As said I'm leaning towards the Freecom but has anyone else had one of these?

Western Digital passport, so awesome. I just bought another one today, limited edition ruby red (so I can tell it apart from the black one I already have tbh).

True, my Maxtor (company owned by Seagate) recently died taking 120gbs of music with it. I have 90% or so of that on CDs but there 9000 miles away and I wont be back in the UK for at least a year.
