I used to work at a Sports Centre, albeit it in the café but saw a few instances of people having to be saved. I hated the lifeguards where I worked, but when I saw them go "into action" it was quite impressive

I used to lifeguard at my local leisure centre when i was younger and its amazing has ignorant the mothers can be sometimes, especially in the baby pool. Most of the time they'll be sitting in the corner having a mothers meeting while the kid will be paddling away in their rubber ring then flip over. Number of times i had to go in and flip the kid back over because i saw a little pair of legs kicking in the air whilst the mother was completely oblivious to the whole event.

some adults are stupid, I hate having to tell people twice me age not to let their kids do backflips from off their shoulders etc, I almost want to kids to get hurt to teach them a lesson, but then I know I'd get the blame if I let it happen.

| I had to do the same as that on holiday in France when I was a kid - the little girl would most probably have drowned, as no one was near her, so I jumped in and turned her the right way up and she started screaming bless her. Upset, but breathing thankfully! Turned out it was a french family, and they were most grateful.
Looking back, it would have been such a tragic way to have lost a child in what you would consider to be a reasonably safe environment.

| once you hear the drown alarm you do just react instantly, or in the case of Saturday before the alarm. Usually it's just a false alarm, we had one on Sunday when I was in the cafe talking to someone, and you just turn and run without even saying goodbye. We had a minor incident on Friday when the special needs group were in the deep pool, and one of them started to go under and the lifeguard whistled, but by the time I was off my chair his carer had grabbed him and the other lifeguard had gone over to him. So I was anticipating another incident, with the whole "these things happen in threes" theory.
Also I have to say almost all my colleagues are fantastic, I'd know if something happened that someone would always be backing me up within seconds, which might well not be the case in some other places.

| technically if you require CPR you are dead already iirc.
I assume every first aid course they repeat the same thing that was drummed into me. Its not your fault whatever happens. As long as you try (and know what your doing obvs) then youve done all you can. It doesnt always work. My instructor told me he was at a police party and some bloke had a heart attack. 30 policemen did CPR for an hour and a half because the ambulance was delayed and they still couldnt save him. I think its hit and miss to some extent really.

CPR won't restart a heart though after a heart attack, you just need to keep the oxygen going in and the blood pumping around the body until the ambulance can get there and use the defib, with a drowning it's different, the heart should still be ok and so CPR can still bring someone round. I'm not sure I'd have classified this kid as dead yet, even without CPR I guess there was a small chance he could cough the water up himself as there was probably still some air in his lungs.
But yeah as long as you do the CPR correctly I can't see how I'd feel bad about it personally if it didn't work. But allowing the situation to happen in the first place might be different.

| The worst one of the religious groups, they'll just do what they want regardless of whether they can swim or not. They wont drown you see because "god will save them" |
