The biggest problem is that these people live secluded lives cut off from the rest of the world in their compounds. Every child is brainwashed from the moment they plop out of the womb, so it isn't entirely surprising to see this sort of thing going on.
One of the funnier parts is that there were so many males being born that the leader started to kick them out for piddly offenses so his group of buddies could take more wives.

As for the case, and in particular the sentence, minimum of 10 to life seems about right, if the guy gets the help he obviously needs.
