Default Need to resize large number of images

Hi Everyone!

I need to resize a folder of images (regular image, blow up image and thumbnail for each. I've been browsing through PS help and I think I need to either write a script (scary) or record an action (which i cannot figure out how to do). What's the easiest way to do this, step by step? I also need to name each of them filename_lg.jpg, filename_md.jpg and filename_sm.jpg.

Thanks for any help you can provide!!

Sarah

Default Need to resize large number of images

Hiya Sarah,

What you want to do is to File > Automate > Batch. Now theoretically, you could use nested actions and do all the modifications at once but I'd suggest that you do multiple batch processes.

First you need to record the actions needed, one to enlarge the images and one to to reduce them (and a middle size one?). Start with a bit of organization. Create your folders for the final processed images.

Now open an image in PS. Start recording an action by clicking on the meatball button at the bottom of the Actions palette. Resize your open image using percentages if the original images are different sizes or pixel dimensions if they are all the same. Make sure you choose the proper algorithm, Bicubic sharper etc. OK Now use Save As... Then close the file.

Your action will have three steps, Image Size, Save, and Close. Now open up your Batch... dialog. I've added an image of the dialog and the settings should be self explanatory. Your's will differ because of the path to the folders will be different but basically they will be the same.

The File Naming dialog is where you will add the _sm or _lg or _med. File naming changes won't work if you use Save to Web... (instead of Save As...) because that is seen by the program as an Export. You can batch process using Save To Web but not with the File Naming included.

Let us know if you have any difficulty figuring it out. The first time you do batch processing it seems confusing until you muddle through. Then it seems simple.

Cheers!
Welles
